Child abuse prevention in our schools
What is Keeping Ourselves Safe?
Keeping Ourselves Safe is a
personal safety programme which aims to provide children and young
people with the skills to cope with situations that might involve
abuse.
Who developed the programme?
The police and teachers, in consultation with a wide range of community
groups, developed and implemented Keeping
Ourselves Safe in schools.
Who is Keeping Ourselves Safe for?
Keeping Ourselves Safe is for
all school students. Different programmes have been prepared for
different age groups so that at each level of their schooling students
learn new skills to keep themselves safer with other people.
Who teaches the programme?
Your local police education officer introduces Keeping
Ourselves Safe to your local school and helps teachers prepare
for teaching. They provide all the teaching materials the school
needs. Your child's teacher then takes the lessons in class. This
teacher is the person most likely to notice a student who needs
help. The police education officer may be invited to participate
in some lessons.
How can I find out more?
Talk to your child's teacher about Keeping
Ourselves Safe to find out when it is being taught in their
class. You may also wish to contact your local police education
officer to find out more. In New Zealand, you can find out the name
of your local police education officer by phoning your nearest police
station.
